June Ipsy!

18 Jun

Ipsy! $10/month

Urban Decay eyeshadow in Lounge.

Crown 3 tone blush. Bronzer, blush, highlighter. The bronzer and highlighter are super shimmery. The pink blush color is a lot less shimmery. Can’t wait to try it out!

Be a bombshell cosmetics pout potion in Secret. Pale pink color. I’m not confident this color will look good on me,  but I do like this brand a lot.

BioRepublic face masks in cucumber breeze and in pomegranate crush.

Formula X mini nail polish in like a watermelon color. No color name is listed. BTW the color I’m wearing is Isabella by Julep with Essie good to go topcoat.

This is a pretty good Ipsy bag this month! Yay!

Here’s my Ipsy referral link if anyone wants to sign up for a subscription

Boxycharm March 2014 Box!

3 Apr

Boxycharm – $21/month

I re-signed up for Boxycharm this month after seeing the moisturizer as a sneak peek item. This is the best box I’ve seen from them yet!

Pur-lisse moisturizer – $55, Bella Pierre Makeup Base – $19, Bella Pierre “Earth” shimmer eye shadow – $15, Model Co Party Proof Lipstick in “Pinking of You” – $17, StrangeBeautiful Nail Polish in “Pussy Willow and BandAid” – $18.

That totals $124 value for this box!

Up until now Boxycharm has mostly been full size drugstore brand make up, nails and hair products only. This is the first box that is such a high value!

I highly recommend signing up for this box now that it is increasing in quality!

Big Lots Finds

17 Jul

I scored a few new makeup items last weekend at Big Lots. I paid $11.50 + tax for these three.

Almay Blush in Natural, Physician’s Formula Baked eyeshadow trio in Baked Spices, Almay Smart Shade Makeup with SPF 15 in Medium.

The Physician’s Formula package says this shadow trio can be used either wet or dry. I tried wetting the applicator after trying the shadow dry first with hardly any color show up. This MUST be used wet, dry is not an option unless you are new to makeup and timid about having any eye color, then by all means apply with a dry brush and it will be a very sheer layer of shimmer.

I applied with wet applicator that is included in the compact, no primer. I also used Physician’s Formula mineral eye liner pencil in Black, then lightly dabbed the smudger side of the pencil across the top of the lash line to smooth out the line. BTW, this eyeshadow lasted all day and night since it was appplied wet.

I have a few other blushes that I love love love, so at first I thought this one was a waste and becsuse it was an impulse bargain purchase. But! I have found myself using the Almay blush in Natural everyday since I bought it. It has a toasty glow to it. The included brush is not very good for blending in the color on my cheeks. I’ve been applying this right before walking out the door to work in the morning, so I swipe it on with the little brush in the compact and blend with my fingers as I rush to my car. I could seed this blush color working on almost everyone. Doesn’t look shimmery when on my skin even though it looks shimmery in the pan.

Big Lots should rename its store “impulse shoppers unite” there’s always a deal in these stores that I can’t resist.

NYX Queen of the Night, Sation polish, e.l.f Haul

17 Jul

NYX Queen of the Night Makeup set.

Does it count as a haul if it’s a box set with 10 items plus false lashes? Lol. I was at Marshall’s yesterday and saw this irresistible price on a NYX box set. $5 markdown!! Before I bought this I only owned 2 NYX products that I have bought at Urban Outfitters and get a lot of use out of. I bought a couple other items, too (Sation nail polish and e.l.f products).

Eyeshadow singles in Asphalt (top left) & Beauty Queen (top right). Trio compact in Perpetual (bottom 3 colors). Yowza, I definitely don’t own anything like the red or green in this trio!! Here’s  a review I found of this palette.

Lipstick in Saturn & Uberchic. Haven’t opened these yet, but picture looks like true color + more shimmer in real life.

Black Pearl liquid eyeliner, Vixen Jumbo Lip Pencil, Copper Penny & Garnet Brush On Gloss, Mega Shine Gloss in Juicy Red.

Swatches! Black Pearl liner dries matte soft black with a hint of tiny glitter. Jumbo lip pencil applies so smooth and creamy with a glossy finish (no glitter!), I wish this was in a lighter shade. Brush on glosses started to bleed on my hand wrinkles, maybe use less product for a sheer wash of color. Mega Shine Gloss has virtually no color and is a juicy wet look….rawr!

The last item in the NYX set is the Individual Lashes set of 60, no glue included. I’ve never worn false lashes, I think these individual ones will be a good start. Are you suppose to throw these away after using, or can they be re used?

I Also bought: Sation Nail Polish Cast a Spill on You (satin blue) & Penty of Frogs (grass green with silver micro shimmer)

I take it this was from a fairytale collection? May’s Ipsy glam bag gave us all a Sation nail polish, never heard of or seen this brand other than through Ipsy until I bought these polishes. These were the only 2 Sation colors I saw. There were also some pretty SpaRitual polishes at Marshall’s – I only recently learned about this brand through my Glossybox I got less than 2 weeks ago!

I also bought e.l.f. Daily Brush Cleaner for $3 and an e.l.f. Mineral Powder Brush $2.69.

All for under $20!!!! 11 NYX makeup items for less than the cost of one!!! Yippee!! So excited to try out all my new stuff! Run, don’t walk to get your own clearance NYX makeup set 😀

Let me know in comments what is your favorite NYX product?

Don’t buy this eye shadow in these colors.

Revlon Colorstay 16hr Eyeshadow Quad in Free Spirit – $7.99 online, $8.49 at my local CVS

I ordered the Total Beauty Revlon Collection (no longer available) recently and even though I was skeptical of drug stores quality eyeshadow, I was pretty impressed with the Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in Sea Mist, so I opened to the idea of picking up the same quad in more playful colors. I have grown an affinity over the last two years towards Urban Decay, Stila, and especially theBalm’s amazing eyeshadow quality that I never considered buying drugstore brands’ eyeshadow (unless they are uber uber discounted, then the bargain shopping monster in me takes over my body and wallet), I own too much eyeshadow to wantonly add more to my collection.

I liked the colors in the Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in Free Spirit, this was part of the same seasonal Revlon collection as the items I received in the Total Beauty Box. It came with a little pamphlet with a combination of looks to make with the new shadows and lip butters. When I saw the Revlon display at CVS I couldn’t talk myself out of buying the Free Spirit quad, with its matte blue and periwinkle colors. It was $8.49 with no special offers going on and I had no coupons, I impulsively just bought it.
In the swatch above I had to slather on many many layers to get the pigment to show in 3 of the 4 colors, the beige color only one swipe. Can we say CHALKY color or what? My medium skin tone does the chalky quality no favors, either.

Oops, these are swatched backwards! This is MUCH better with a shimmery creme shadow as a base, though I still had to apply many many times to get this pigmentation and can still see the bottom shimmer through the applied colors.

It seems like my pricier eyeshadows must have a built in primer, along with more pigment and much silkier texture. I wish I could return this Revlon palette, I was okay with the quality of the Sea Mist quad from the Total Beauty Revlon box, but Free Spirit really sucked. I am convincing myself not to throw it out and I can just use the beige color for an everyday-going-to-work look. That was the winner of the 4. Even though I bought this to try out the playful blue shades, I got one good beige out of it. Ironic? Maybe the universe is telling me to stop spending $$ on makeup. Never! Hahaha.

On to my 2nd bad review:
Revlon Lip Butters in Sorbet and Pink Lemonade. Both colors were swiped a few times to get the darker colors to show up since they are intended to be a sheer application of color. If you are a fan of wearing lip color, I highly recommend you avoid from this same collection the Pink Lemonade shade Lip Butter (bottom color swatch in photo). It basically shows up invisible since it’s such a sheer light pink, and feels like a thick, heavy mouthful of chapstick if you try to layer it enough to achieve any hint of color. If you don’t like wearing lip color, then you are the intended target for Pink Lemonade. Sorbet (top fuscia color), however, is…how should I phrase this…amazeballs!! as much as I dislike Pink Lemonade, I love Sorbet times three!!!

If you have different opinions, let me know if you are applying a shadow primer for better effect, which brand? and if you have a review or photos that I can check out on your blog!

Does Revlon have a shadow primer? Has anyone tried it? I’ve only used Urban Decay’s awesome primer, can anyone recommend a drugstore brand that works as well?

Total Beauty – Revlon Collection

27 Jun

Yeah! I ordered my first Total Beauty Box! The Revlon Collection box is $15, but you can get 20% off by using code TBC20 or RETAILMENOT20 and pay only $12 + free shipping. This box is still available!

Look how colorful it is! The Long Wear nail polish in Trade Winds looks like it will be a cool skin tone color. Fancy.

Revlon Lip Butter in Sorbet (top, fuscia color) and Pink Lemonade (bottom, baby pink color). Love Sorbet for my skin tone. Pink Lemonade doesn’t really show up much more than my natural lip color, so I will only use it in place of chapstick like a tinted balm, or maybe give it to my paler-skinned younger sister. Man o man these feel soo nice and buttery. Sorbet is totally the kind of lip color I’m drawn to. My First lip butters, yay!

I have to say how surprised I am that the Color Stay 16 hr eyeshadow quad in Sea Mist has decent color playoff. I was expecting more chalky, transparent color application. Granted, these are definitely not Urban Decay quality shadows, but good enough that I will actually use this quad. These colors all have a satin sheen, and you can probably tell that the top left color looks like a charcoal grey on my skin, but more like indigo/violet in the palette. That’s okay, I might try using that color as a liner.

I had to give in and try out this collection. “It’s only $12,” I told myself. I think it’s worth it. The eyeshadow quad is $8.49 at CVS, and the lip butters are $7.99 each, plus $7.99 for the nail polish. That’s about $32.50 + tax!

I probably will never use the pale Pink Lemonade lip butter, though. Too bad, but still a good value box. Remember to use a coupon code if you order here!

CVS Makeup Haul! e.l.f, Rimmel, CoverGirl, N.Y.C., Salma Hayek Nuance

14 Jun

My makeup artist friend asked me if I wanted to assist her on a job this past Sunday. It was for a conference with a bunch of doctors taking corporate type photos and we only have 2-5 minutes for makeup as everyone arrives at the same time during the scheduled breaks in the itinerary. It was mostly powdering to reduce shine, even out skin tone, refresh already applied makeup, quickly bring out a feature before they go in front of the camera, brighten up some tired attendees eyes, tame flyaway hair 🙂  I was so excited because this would be my first professional makeup job :D. But I had to buy some items to fill in holes in my makeup kit quick & cheap with hardly any time to do so – and I didn’t want to spend much money, no sense to spend it all before I earn it! Luckily, I happen to see some products at MARSHALL’S/TJ MAXX that fit that description. Here’s what I bought to fill in my collection:

I have never tried e.l.f brand makeup, in fact I usually make a sharp turn in the opposite direction when I see it assuming that because it is soo cheap that I won’t like it at all.

e.l.f. Mineral Blemish Kit $4.99 ($8 online) – Translucent mineral powder with small brush. I didn’t use the brush at all. Smaller container is handy to work with, but I will end up using this for myself.

e.l.f. Mineral 3-Piece Eyeshadow & Brush Set in Nude $3.00 ($5 online) Loose shadows in “celebrity” (champagne) and “elegant” (light bronze) + eyeshadow brush. Really universal colors, the shimmer is enough for eyes to become 3D and pop but not too sparkley to over do it in a photo.

e.l.f. Studio 11 Piece Brush Collection $24.99 ($30 online) – The blush, buff, concealer, eyebrow brushes were the MOST used throughout the day. Beware that the head of the concealer brush came unglued the first time I pulled it out of the case. That sucked.

e.l.f. Studio Eyelash Curler $2.69 ($3 online)Works just fine even though it was so cheap! We’ll see how long it lasts!

Nikka K Absolute! Makeup Cleansing wipes $4.99 pack of 60 ($6.99 online) – I just got a Nikka K brand solid perfume stick in my Glossybox, that’s the first I’ve heard of this brand, so I kind of liked seeing another product from them. It verified that this is an actual company producing products lol.

All the above, plus a trip to CVS for a few more things to complete my kit:

Rimmel Kate Lipstick 08 $4.99 – I thought I should have a nude/mauve color on hand. This is kind of matte, so I would add some gloss for dimension instead of being flat in the photo, but I didn’t end up using it at all. Now it’s in my purse. I wore it to work today :).

CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara in Black & Brown $4.50 each ($8.99 regular)(they were on sale 50% off at my local CVS) Spend your $$ elsewhere!!! turns out that this mascara formula does nothing. It didn’t coat lashes very well, but I was using individual disposable mascara wands, maybe the one it comes with works better. (**Note: I tried it this morning on my lashes and counted 14 brush strokes before my lashes looked like they had mascara applied. Who has time for 14 coats of mascara per eye?? I suppose the bright side is that it is very buildable, and in a sunshine yellow tube!**)

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder Translucent $2.99 – Oh my lord this was priceless. It was easily my most used product!

N.Y.C Cover Stick in Light $1.99 – Between this and the Nuance Deep color I can mix for in between shades. My friend had 3 palettes with like 18 different concealer shades, so I mostly used that. Way easier. Honestly, I don’t think I’m ever going to use this.

N.Y.C. Classic Brow/Liner Pencil in Taupe $.99 Soft brown to line the bottom of the eye or fill brows. Texture is a bit waxy, though, but it will do in a pinch!

Nuance Salma Hayek Concealer & Brightener in Deep – (Actually, my friend gave this to me, but it is a CVS exclusive brand. $10.99)

Bausch & Lomb Eye Drops $4.99 – I have these in my purse and use them every day right before I get to work so I look well rested and refreshed. It’s amazing the difference it makes, it wakes up your while face, no sleepy eyes.

Plus Q-Tips ($3.79), generic hand sanitizer ($1.99) and a box of Kleenex ($.99). Okay, I had a lot of fun even though there wasn’t much time with each person. My friend, Jeannie, gave me a crash course on Friday night (over a few glasses of wine) on mixing concealers from her kit, lining with different powders, using different brushes, etc. I practiced on my friend/neighbor and she was such a good sport even when I tried to curl her lashes with a lash curler and did NOT poke her eyeball, I sensed her fear!! If I get the chance to assist her again, hopefully I will have more time and a budget to stock up on some nicer brands. I am a proud, though, taking a step beyond makeup novice!
